Melanie Newkome Jones

Melanie was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; graduating from Baton Rouge Magnet High School and Louisiana State University with a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism and a Minor in Sociology. Melanie then graduated from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in December 1990, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board.

Melanie initially worked as an attorney with two (2) small firms until she opened her own firm in 1997 in Baton Rouge. Since that time, she has handled family, personal injury, successions and general litigation matters. In 1991, Melanie completed her mediation training and began mediating civil matters. Thereafter, she trained and became certified in family mediation. Beginning in 2008, she began mediating primarily family matters, in addition to her litigation practice. Melanie has received her Board Certification as a Specialist in Family Law in January 2010, which certification is through the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization. She is presently the chair of the Family Section of the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization which overseas the examination and application process.

Melanie has always been active in professional organizations. She was the past chair of the Family Law Section of the Baton Rouge Bar Association of 2010 and a past-president of the Baton Rouge Association of Women Attorneys. She is also on the Pro-Bono Committee of the Bar Association and is a octuple century club member (providing over eight hundred hours of free legal service to those in need.) Melanie was awarded the 2012 Pro Bono Publico Award by the Louisiana State Bar Association for outstanding Pro Bono Services to Louisiana's indigent.

Melanie has been providing legal services to individuals and families for over twenty-two years as an attorney and mediator in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. She strives to encourage an amicable resolution, particularly in family matters, as cooperation between parents is in the children’s best interests whenever possible. However, Melanie is also a competent, experienced trial lawyer in Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes if the matter is incapable of an amicable resolution. Melanie is a compassionate and conscientious advocate for her clients, and  strives to provide legal services at competitive rates.
