Melanie Newkome Jones

Melanie was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; graduating from Baton Rouge Magnet High School and Louisiana State University with a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism and a Minor in Sociology. Melanie then graduated from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in December 1990, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board.

Melanie initially worked as an attorney with two (2) small firms until she opened her own firm in 1997 in Baton Rouge. Since that time, she has handled family, personal injury, successions and general litigation matters. In 1991, Melanie completed her mediation training and began mediating civil matters. Thereafter, she trained and became certified in family mediation. Beginning in 2008, she began mediating primarily family matters, in addition to her litigation practice. Melanie has received her Board Certification as a Specialist in Family Law in January 2010, which certification is through the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization.

Melanie has always been active in professional organizations. She is presently the chair of the Family Law Section of the Baton Rouge Bar Association for 2010 and Melanie  is a past-president of the Baton Rouge Association of Women Attorneys. She is also on the Pro-Bono Committee of the Bar Association and is a quintuple century club member (providing over five hundred hours of free legal service to those in need).

Melanie is married and the mother of four daughters, ages 12-20. She is active at her church and in her children’s schools. She has a number of interests including photography, reading and her newest hobby, beekeeping.

Melanie has been providing legal services to individuals and families for over nineteen years as an attorney and mediator in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. She strives to encourage an amicable resolution, particularly in family matters, as cooperation between parents is in the children’s best interests whenever possible. However, Melanie is also a competent, experienced trial lawyer in Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes if the matter is incapable of an amicable resolution. Melanie is a compassionate and conscientious advocate for her clients, and  strives to provide legal services at competitive rates.
